EMMA BENNETT

Emma Bennett is an artist working with performance, language, video and object. Her work draws on diverse methods and media to explore the relationship between the verbal and the thingly.

In Thick Description, a spoken performance with object-interruption, language gets caught up in things, knotted and tangled in increasingly bizarre configurations. Between sense and sound, there is a voice, a patterning of pauses, indeterminate colours and perhaps a sense of something-about-to-happen; a stretched elastic band or loaded cannon. A voice speaking shapes space, and time, and a solid sense of this informs this attempt on the ‘sculptural-funny’ in language, in speech. ‘Sculptural’ because it has to do with form, shape, matter, position, space; ‘funny’ because it has to do with timing, and calamity, and stupidity, and surprise. Not verbal jokes so much as word-things, language-matter, stretched and released, squashed, piled up and then dropped.

The work attempts a cross-media poetics of tactility, wit, stupidity, slapstick, childish glamour, animal curiosity, and something like a cartoon metaphysics.
